What is Torticollis (Wry Neck)?

Torticollis, also known as “Wry Neck”, is a condition where the head tilts to one side while the chin points in the opposite direction. It can affect babies, children, and adults, but is most commonly seen in newborn babies.

Left Torticollis

In Left Torticollis, the left ear tilts toward the left shoulder, while the face and chin turn toward the right side.

Right Torticollis

In Right Torticollis, the right ear tilts toward the right shoulder, while the face and chin turn toward the left side.

Why Does Torticollis Happen?

Torticollis usually occurs when the neck muscles, especially the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle, become tight or shortened on one side of the neck. This can limit neck movement and cause the head to tilt abnormally.

Torticollis Causes

Causes of Torticollis

Torticollis can develop due to muscle tightness, birth-related conditions, injuries, or other medical problems affecting the neck muscles and posture.

👶 Birth-Related Muscle Injury

Injury to the neck muscles during childbirth may lead to tightening or shortening of the neck muscles.

🛏️ Poor Neck Position

Improper neck positioning in the womb or after birth can put pressure on the neck muscles and affect alignment.

⚡ Muscle Spasm or Injury

Neck injuries, muscle spasms, or stiffness can restrict movement and cause abnormal head positioning.

👁️ Bone or Vision Problems

In some cases, bone abnormalities or vision-related issues may also contribute to the development of torticollis.

Torticollis Symptoms

Symptoms to Watch For

Recognizing the early signs of torticollis can help in getting timely treatment and preventing long-term posture or muscle problems.

↘️ Head Tilts to One Side

One of the most common signs is the head consistently tilting toward one shoulder.

🔄 Face Turns Opposite

The chin and face may turn toward the opposite side of the neck tilt.

⚡ Neck Stiffness or Tightness

Tightness or stiffness in the neck muscles may restrict normal movement.

👶 Uneven Facial Features

If untreated for a long time, torticollis may lead to facial asymmetry or uneven facial development.

😣 Difficulty Moving the Head

Children or adults with torticollis may feel discomfort or pain while turning or moving the head.
